In our present world, a vow broken is a bond lost. But in War and Aether, a vow broken could mean a life lost.
In War and Aether every culture, people, and region all possess their own forms of marriage or life-com commitments to their partner.
-The Reachmen who follow the Whims of Fate will tie their souls and their eternal bond in the threads of fate, often before an Inquisitor of the Lodge.
-The Orcs write and sing songs to their soulbonds, detailing their beginning, their middle, and what’s in store for their end.
-The Dwarves carve their names in rock and stone as they pledge their unwavering loyalty to each other.
-The Wood Elves are known for kissing during a deep embrace, while under the watchful eyes of friends and loved ones, and standing beneath a sacred tree.
-To the North, the Fringefolk challenge themselves and put themselves in situations they normally couldn’t or wouldn’t handle, to profess the lengths they would go for the ones they love.
Whatever the people far and wide, everyone has a tradition for the truest and deepest love shared with others, and in that tradition means binding their lives to one another - sometimes literally.
The interbinding of souls is a well recorded and documented phenomenon, and while few experience the tragedy of breaking these bindings first-hand, most people understand the threat that comes with it. There is real magic in dedicating your life to someone else's. A vow so sacred, and so powerful, that if broken can lead to ruin for those that dare break it. Monstrous entities, undying specters, and curses of legend befoul those who would break their bonds.
In War and Aether, not all who break their vows and leave their partners are cursed, but enough are cursed to ward off many who might try. For example the Akavaran Curse is but one that affects those who have broken their vows, and physically transforms the breaker into a monstrous creature to be shunned and unloved by all others, while retaining their intellect and identity.
True-love, marriage, and soul-binding is a most serious commitment that can result in real pain and misery if broken. However, what about those who fall out of love? The soulbinding can be broken without harming either party, but it often takes powerful magics or specific rituals by those knowledgeable in the practice.
