Happy end of May! Today we have another storytime post and it’s one of my (Emma) personal favorites just because of how funny and ironic it is. Do you have a funny story from tabletop? We’d love to hear more!

Alright, so, this story takes place in our current War & Aether campaign where our party is exploring level by level of an underworld. We were in a level where the temperatures were freezing and it was snowing all around us. After running into and defeating multiple creatures, we came across a frozen lake. As far as we knew we couldn’t see anything and there wasn’t a great way to get around it but we didn't trust the lake so we all decided to just run across it at full speed. But that’s not all. You see we wouldn’t have been able to cross the lake based on our current stats and movement speed. So what did we do? Have the buff magic party member give us a ton of buffs that made us capable of bolting across the lake. And you know what? It actually worked. Between all the magic buffs on us it allowed us to become The Flash and literally bolt across the frozen lake in a second! Once we got to the other side—where we were all safe—it was revealed to us by our GM (psst he’s the guy who wrote W&A) that there was a ginormous water elemental under the ice and we literally didn’t trigger the combat because we all were able to cross the lake in one turn. And let’s just say we had to stop the game for a good 5 minutes or so because we couldn’t stop laughing at the situation.
However, our party also had another NPC party following us and this is where the funny story about completely avoiding this monster turns ironic because we had to go back and save this party. So yeah, yeah we end up fighting this giant beast. Party members were on the brink of death. Old man Glittery Glow came in clutch with his fire magic, and we were able to save the NPC party.
We realize this week’s post is a bit sillier than our usual content but tabletop is full of moments like these. Sure, it’s really cool to talk about the crazy monsters you’ve encountered or talk about really dramatic storylines but funny moments like this—that potentially stop the game from happening because everyone around the table is laughing like crazy—really show that tabletop can be anything and your only boundary is your imagination. Personally, I think I reflect on the funnier moments in tabletop more just because it reminds me that I’m playing with my friends and we’re all here to have a good time.
